Mortar is used to bind masonry materials
together. Mortar is made in a variety of ways, depending on the
job and the binding strength required. For decorative purposes
it can be colored, and it can be applied in a clean precise way
or with a casual country look. There are styles of patterns or
ornamental bonds in which to set stone and brick. These are described
in terms of the masonry construction of joints and courses which
develop into architectural features such as window sills and
arches. There are particular types of brick bonds such as running or
stretcher bond, English or Dutch bond. Stones
are set in stone patterns such as an Ashlar pattern.
